An end in terror is preferable to terror without end.

Sophie Scholl
About This Quote

The Terror lasted from 1789 to 1814 in France. During this time the French Revolution took place. This was a time of political upheaval that resulted in the death of thousands and the incarceration of many more thousands. The French Revolutionary government's response to this situation was one of terror, torture, and mass murder.

However, the Terror did not last forever. In 1793, a group of French people who had been imprisoned for their beliefs were released from jail. They began a secret organization called the Society of the Friends of Truth.

Later known as the Jacobins, they were a revolutionary group who believed in using terror against the government in order to bring about changes in the government and society. Their goal was to overthrow the monarchy and restore a republic with equal rights for all men and women.
